Bielski Otriad

Bielski Otriad
   Otriad refers to partisan brigades that fought the Nazis in Belarussia. The best known of the Jewish partisan brigades was the Bielski Otriad, which was organized in the summer of 1942 with Tuvia Bielski as the commander. Along with his brothers Zus and Asael, Tuvia Bielski from the beginning saw as his mission to save as many Jews as possible, which included sending his men into nearby ghettos to encourage them to leave and join the partisans in the forest. Despite internal opposition from some in his group who thought that too large a number of Jews would endanger the Otriad, Tuvia never abandoned his policy of welcoming and protecting Jews from their Nazi tormentors. In all, the Bielski Otriad is credited with saving 1,200 Jewish lives. In 2008, the Bielski partisans were the subject of the film Defiance.
