Transfer Agreement

Transfer Agreement
(Hebrew Haavara)
From the time the Transfer Agreement was signed in August 1933, approximately 50,000 Jews were able to emigrate from Germany to Palestine. According to the accord made between the German government and the Zionist leadership in the Yishuv, Jews could migrate to Palestine and receive their capital in the form of German-produced goods. Germany benefited from this agreement because it could thereby rid the country of its Jews, gain access to their personal wealth, and at the same time export its manufactured goods. For the Jewish Agency, the agreement allowed for an orderly transfer of population from Germany to Palestine, thus achieving an objective of the Zionist movement. Despite a great deal of criticism from Jewish groups that were advocating a boycott of German goods, the World Zionist Congress continued to support the Transfer Agreement.
