Racial Sifting

Racial Sifting
(Rassensiebend).
In May 1940, Heinrich Himmler completed the memo, “Reflections on the Treatment of Peoples of Alien Races in the East,” which he presented to Adolf Hitler, who approved it. In this memorandum, Himmler recommended that “people of alien races in the East be cultivated into as many ethnic groups as possible,” which would be the basis for carrying out the policy of racial sifting. Himmler’s objective was to select racially valuable people and bring them to Germany where they would be assimilated into the Third Reich. Himmler acknowledged that this operation might be “cruel and tragic,” but it “is still the mildest and best one” for those who “reject as un-German . . . the physical extermination of a people.”
