Operation Erntefest
(Operation Harvest Festival)
   On 3–4 November 1943, the Germans shot 43,000 Jews residing in Schutzstaffel (SS) work camps located in the General-Gouvernement. The operation was the largest single shooting massacre of Jews in the war and had as its objective the total elimination of the Polish Jews still remaining in the Lublin region. Jews were shot and hurled into mass graves. As part of the operation, the 18,000 Jews remaining in Majdanek were ordered to dig their own graves before they were executed.
