Anschluss

Anschluss
   This was the German annexation of Austria on 13 March 1938, and its incorporation as a province (Ostmark) of the Third Reich. Although the annexation was imposed by Germany and resisted by some of the population, most Austrians welcomed the Anschluss as evidenced by its overwhelming approval in a subsequent plebiscite. There were approximately 220,000 Jews living in Austria at the time of the Anschluss. Following Germany’s annexation of Austria, it introduced its racial laws and anti-Jewish acts of violence intensified, resulting in the efforts of Jews to emigrate from Austria.
