Karaites

Karaites
A Jewish sect that originated in the eighth century in Babylonia and then spread throughout the Middle East. From the 13th century on, the Karaites made their way into Europe, where many of them settled in the Crimea. The Karaites also migrated to Lithuania and Russia, where they attained full civil rights in the 19th century.
The Karaites were granted their rights in anti-Semitic Czarist Russia because they claimed they were not Jews. This became an issue for the Nazis in 1935 when they enacted the Nuremberg Laws. The small Karaite community in Germany petitioned for an exemption from the anti-Jewish laws on the grounds that they were not of Jewish origin. In January 1939, the Germans concluded that the Karaites were not Jews and exempted them from the hostile measures that were directed toward the Jewish community in Germany and elsewhere in German-occupied Europe.
