Dachau
   Dachau was the first of the Nazi concentration camps and was located about 10 miles from Munich. The camp, which had the capacity to hold 5,000 prisoners, was opened on 20 March 1933. In June 1933 Theodor Eicke was appointed camp commandant and immediately gave it a structure, in the form of his brutal rules and regulations that were applied to the other concentration camps that the Germans constructed throughout the Reich. Dachau was founded as a “political camp” with the objective of “rehabilitating” those who opposed the regime. Under Eicke, Dachau’s reputation struck fear among the German population. In the early years, those imprisoned in Dachau were not primarily Jews but also included communists, Social Democrats, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Gypsies, homosexuals, and anyone suspected of disparaging the regime.
