Concordat

Concordat
On 20 July 1933, the German government negotiated a concordat or agreement with the Vatican. Adolf Hitler assured Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, the future Pius XII, who negotiated the concordat, that as long as the Catholic Church kept to otherworldly and metaphysical matters, he would not interfere in church matters. It was soon clear, however, that Hitler would not tolerate the influence of any organization in Germany besides the Nazi Party. It was not long after the signing of the concordat that the Nazi regime began to subvert the Roman Catholic Church in Germany. Despite protests by German Catholic clergy, a strained relationship between the church and the Nazis emerged that culminated in Pope Pius XI’s encyclical “With Burning Concern” (Mit Brennender Sorge) in 1937. Subsequently, the Nazi regime mounted a campaign of terror against the German Catholic clergy that ultimately reduced the influence of the church in Germany.
